We at Dig-IT are really excited about Rockant, the virtual learning meet-up space for managers of international programs, products and services. Rockant opens up a lot more opportunities to give birth to new projects and engage you and the industry more creatively and pro-actively.

Rockant will be officially launching Rockant in March as the premier virtual learning meet-up space for managers of international programs, products and services So, if you have not signed up or started your own training group yet, don’t wait. Do so now. Open registration ends in 3 weeks.

But for right now, we want to talk about you

We bet you’ve got some exciting new projects you want to see come to life. The economy has done a hard shift. After the economic earthquake of 2008 (and all those aftershocks), managers of international programs, products and services are still figuring out what it means for them and their organizations.

Companies look different. Employment looks different. Recreation looks different. Relationships look different. Travel looks different. Translation technology is undergoing major revolution from heavy implementations to cloud-based solutions that work right away, on every major platform, and provide immediate benefits and ROI.

Everything right now is new and changing. Which, as you may have noticed, is exhausting. And creates stress. And that creates interesting problems that you can start solving for your customers — no matter what your area of expertise.

As long as we’re in this world of profound instability, you can help others by teaching them how to navigate that change and come out on top.

Your customers are learners – they need you

They don’t need stale authorities who mastered what was needed in the last century. They need the true experts who can teach them what they need to know today. There’s tremendous opportunity — and especially, opportunity to do great things by helping other people out. You can’t beat that.

Rockant provides you with a platform to do just that. Things you’ve been wanting to share for a while: You can make it FINALLY make it happen with Rockant – and using this virtual learning meet-up space is still free. And starting in April will help you make money with it too.

If that sounds interesting, we want you to remember this: You don’t have to be perfect right out of the gate. You just have to get started.

Most people and projects have humble beginnings. And anyone you think has it ‘all figured out’ once fumbled around in the dark to find their way.

Do you know this story?

Back when NASA started launching manned spacecraft in the 1960s, they found out that the astronauts couldn’t use pens to write with while in space. The ink wouldn’t flow down through the pen in a zero-gravity environment. NASA decided to retain a man named Paul Fisher to design a pen that would work in space.

$1.5 million later, they had a solution. NASA now had a pen that worked in zero gravity, in a vacuum, and in a drastic temperature range.

The Russian cosmonauts had the same problem, of course. So they used a pencil.

Get started now

We also want to hear about YOUR vision and plans for 2013 so we can help support you this year with helping you to get started, set-up your training group, and anything else we can dream up to help you grow your business – even if you only do it on the side.

We don’t care if you do it part-time or full-time. We just want you to do it. Start your learning group in Rockant now.

Professional accountants do not begrudge the software makers their home business clients. That’s silly.

Talented yoga teachers certainly don’t mind the selection of instructional video (or their viewers). Sooner or later, if you want to improve in yoga, you will find an instructor.

Professional typesetting, graphic design and other disciplines have not gone away despite the high number of low-cost software solutions for the amateur. Only insecure careerists fight off technology. The professionals, though, those with real talent, use technological shifts to move up the food chain. It is easy to encourage buyers of translation services to explore and experiment with crowdsourcing platforms. Professional translators bring more than just good tools to their work.

The best translators love it when clients use machine translation or crowdsourcing. The insight of their limitations pushes both client and translator to do better work.

Talented translators don’t fear the crowd or the cloud. Bring them on! When you need something worth paying for, they say, we’ll be here. And what we will sell you will be worth more than we charge you.

If you are upset by advancements in translation technology, get better instead of getting angry.

Global consumers will continue to place strong emphasis on price, convenience, and quality in making their decisions about where to shop and what to buy. Do you still think cutting corners in localization is a good idea?

A recent report form Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL), Global Powers of Consumer Products 2012 states that “more consumer products companies are integrating business performance improvement, information management, and advanced analytics initiatives to meet the needs of their businesses. In many cases consumer products executives will seek to deploy existing and new technologies in a disruptive way, to further engage with consumers and customers…”

I have predicted that in December 2011 at the first Localization Forum of the Translator Association of China (TAC) and in April 2012 during my webinar for the Globalization And Localization Association.(if you missed it, you can watch it here):

The role of the translator and the in-house translation reviewer continues to change. The end-user is becoming the ultimate judge of the quality of translated text and usability of localized services and products. There is great opportunity here for both buyers and providers of localization services to collaborate in harnessing the power of the end client and in integrating the voice of the consumer communities as early as in research and development.

As new technologies continue to change the future of the translation industry, how do translation companies stay relevant and competitive?

In February 2012, a US state trooper used the iPhone to communicate with a diabetic Chinese man who was lying on the side of the road exhausted after driving nonstop from Montana to Oregon without insulin or food, thus saving the man’s life. The translation and interpretation technology surely is then good enough for daily use in a restaurant in France, a sightseeing tour in China or a department store in Germany.

New technologies continue to change the future of the translator and the $15b translation industry:

Quality is being defined by a crowd of end-users, not a few in-house reviewers and linguists

Access to linguistic assets has become more important than owning them

Process automation eliminates charges for project management and engineering

Collaboration has become a competitive advantage, not word rates, turnaround times and quality

How do translation companies fit into this new economy?

Germans are complaining about the rising price of sausages, which are made with sheep intestines imported from Iran – important enough for USA Today to dedicate almost half a page to the story. It does highlight how interconnected we are. Iranian sheep intestines have surged from $8.16 to $22.84 per 100 yards (enough to make about 1,000 sausages) – allegedly a result from sanctions against the country. ‘Made in Germany’ for sausage means as much as ‘Made in the USA’ for laptops – even though Nuremberg bratwurst are protected by the European Union and must be made in the southern German city of Nuremberg using a centuries-old recipe. It apparently matters less where the ingredients came from.
